Calvin Harris called out the Daily Mail for publishing a fake tweet about him, his girlfriend Taylor Swift, and singer Avril Lavigne.

The Mail reported that Harris tweeted defending Swift, but the Taylor Swift tweet was non-existent, he pointed out on Twitter.

Harris wrote, “I’m not in favour of photoshopping fake tweets and then running them on your news outlet daily mail etc,” in part.

The Mail‘s story originally said, according to a Google search:

The story now is headlined: “Calvin Harris reveals he didn’t wade in on Avril Lavigne and Taylor Swift fan meet and greets debacle…he was victim of fake Tweet.” The article reads:

“He is known for rushing to his girlfriends defence on social media.

“But it seems that for once Calvin Harris had someone else doing the talking for him, after he was the victim of a fake Tweet.

“The musician was thought to have waded in on the escalating social media storm which was sparked by Avril Lavigne responding to a fans montage of Taylor Swift with her supporters at meet and greets.”

As of 10:15 PM EST last night, the article didn’t carry a correction or disclose the Mail itself said Harris wrote the now-known-to-be fake tweet. iMediaEthics has contacted the Mail for comment.

“Earlier this week after a Tumblr post compared the way Swift gets up close and personal with her fans to photos of Lavigne and other music stars awkwardly keeping their distance during meet and greets. After Swift supposedly ‘liked’ the post, Lavigne tweeted, ‘Comparison is judging and judging a person does not define who they are it defines who you are. We all Love our fans.’

“Lavigne further shared a photo collage showing many times she happily posed with fans, and added, ‘So let’s keep it all about the love and stay positive.’ But while Swift never directly commented on the comparison, it was alleged on Monday night that Harris had tweeted and then deleted a dig at Lavigne.”

E! Online posted an update admitting the Calvin Harris tweet was bogus, writing “Calvin Harris‘ tweet appears to be inauthentic after all.”
