The Associated Press referred to the large group of Honduran migrants moving through Central America as a “ragged, growing army.”

The original AP tweet, from the AP Politics Twitter account, read, “A ragged, growing army of migrants resumes march toward US.” The tweet was linked to an article from the AP’s Mark Stevenson about Honduran migrants “heading toward the United States.”

“In dozens of interviews along the journey, they have said they are fleeing widespread violence, poverty and corruption in Honduras,” the AP reported. “The caravan is unlike previous mass migrations for its unprecedented large numbers, and because it largely began spontaneously through word of mouth.”

After deleting the tweet, the AP posted a new tweet linking to that story with the message:  “They have said they are fleeing widespread violence, poverty and corruption in Honduras. The growing caravan of migrants has resumed its journey to the U.S.”

After about four hours and numerous critical replies, the AP deleted the tweet, saying it “lacked context.”

The AP tweet noting the deletion read, “We have deleted a tweet about the migrant caravan moving through Central America and Mexico because it lacked context. A new tweet will be posted shortly.”

iMediaEthics has contacted the AP to ask exactly what “context” was missing, and if the phrasing “ragged, growing army” was used in any stories or other social media posts.
