The Guardian is getting a new readers editor.

Paul Chadwick, who began his term as public editor in June 2016, published his last readers editor column Jan. 19.

In his column, Chadwick summarized some of the key editorial and ethical tenets for staff to follow:

“Be accurate, or become so. Strive to be fair. Be accountable, especially when circumstances prevent a promise from being kept. To give offence is sometimes inevitable in journalism, but think how to minimise it. Work against harmful discrimination. Privacy is, like freedom of expression, a human right. Weigh them with care. Respect grief. Protect children. In the public interest, disclose, disclose, disclose. (The public will do the rest.)”

Elisabeth Ribbans will replace Chadwick. The Guardian MEdia Group’s shareholder The Scott Trust appointed Ribbans in November stating:

“Ribbans will have global oversight of readers’ complaints to Guardian News & Media including for Guardian US, Guardian Australia, and The Observer, ensuring that a fast, fair and transparent complaints process is practised globally. She will report directly into The Scott Trust, maintaining independence and impartiality for the Guardian’s internal complaints processes.”
