The Star Sunday newspaper was found guilty of contempt and defamation after it “deliberately repeated false and defamatory statements,” the Irish Times reported.

The Star had already been found guilty of defaming Barry Walters, “a self-confessed and convicted child pornography user.”

The newspaper was instructed to publish an apology and correction to Walters, but instead repeated the defamation and “refused to accept the order and judgment” of the court, the Irish Times reported.  As a result, the judge, Joseph Matthews, found the newspaper had “committed contempt in the fact of his judgment.”

The repeated defamatory statement was: “We may have to apologise to this revolting pervert but will we mean it? Hell no.”
