Columbia Journalism Review wondered if the recent trend in labeling certain stories “Fact-Check” suggests that stories without the labels aren’t fact checked.

Also, CJR wondered if “by assigning ‘fact-checking’ responsibility to a particular story or blog, we send a message that the vast majority of political news stories that aren’t explicitly part of the genre are absolved of that responsibility.”

Specifically, CJR questioned the role of fact check stories in the political sphere, citing a Sept. 7 story in which Rick Perry, Karl Rove, Dick Cheney and Mitt Romney’s claims on Social Security are all provided without a factual response to their claims.
