The New York Times corrected a June 28 article about Ann Curry’s final day on the NBC “Today” show that “referred erroneously to a highlight reel of Ms. Curry” that wasn’t part of the show in question.

According to the June 30 correction: “The highlight video was available on the show’s Web site; it was not shown on the television show Thursday and should not have been included as part of the critique of Thursday’s show. The highlight reel was created last year, when Ms. Curry started in her role as host, not in connection with her departure.”

The Hollywood Reporter, which highlighted The Times’ error, reported that NBC News President Steve Capus ripped the Times‘ story as “bad journalism.”  He said:

“I think there are a lot of sloppy examples of journalism these days.  When a television critic writes a critique of a program and then later admits she hasn’t watched the television broadcast, that’s bad journalism. That’s not just a mistake.”

Poynter reported that Times reporter Alessandra Stanley explained her error (“I watched the show on TV, but didn’t tape it so I rewatched it online; the highlights reel was online, but was not shown by ‘Today,'” she is quoted as saying) and published the section of the Times article about the highlight reel that has since been taken out.

According to the Hollywood Reporter, the original Times article also carried two other errors: a misidentification in a photo caption error and a false claim in the story  that “Savannah Guthrie, Curry’s replacement, was included in Thursday’s Today show send-off. Guthrie was on the show during the 7 a.m. hour to discuss the Supreme Court Health Care ruling, but she was not in the studio for Curry’s goodbye.”

Those corrections, added June 28, read:

“An earlier version of this article erroneously stated that Savannah Guthrie was included in Thursday’s episode of ‘Today.’ An earlier version of a photo caption posted with this article also misidentified Natalie Morales as Ms. Guthrie.”
