China’s The Metropolis Times apologized for calling a Chinese teenager competing at the Olympics “the most shameful defeat for Chinese female weightlifters,” Reuters reported.
According to Reuters, the teenager, Zhou Jun, “failed to lift the starting weight in the 53-kg category.”
The Australian noted that the Times had criticized Zhou in “a strongly worded opinion piece.”
The Wall Street Journal’s China Real Time blog reported that the apology was published on the front-page and that the newspaper’s editor-in-chief posted on social media that “We feel sorry about having used the word ‘humiliating.”” The Journal’s report identified the Metropolis Times as the City Times.
