The UK Daily Mail has been busy with legal threats from celebrities this week.

The London Times  reports that Angelina Jolie is suing the Daily Mail for publishing a 1999 video of her that, it claimed, showed her when “she was addicted to heroin.”

The full London Times article is behind a paywall but the excerpt available on the London Times website says Jolie “has started legal action.

According to Gawker, the video was first posted on National Enquirer’s website, but the Mail re-published it.

National Enquirer published the video on July 9, labeling it a “bombshell exclusive” and a “shocking, never-before-seen video.”  The Enquirer said it got the 16-minute video from a man who said he was Jolie’s former drug dealer.

The video shows Jolie walking around in a room and talking on the phone, reportedly with her father, Jon Voight. The video ends shortly after Jolie ends the phone call, with the cameraman saying to her “You gotta trust me a little more.”

The Daily Mail published the video with numerous still shots and an article about the video. It was headlined, “Bloodshot hollow eyes, emaciated arms and rambling on the phone: Haunting video of Angelina Jolie the heroin addict.” The article claimed “her eyes are bloodshot and hollow, her arms emaciated and scratched.” It added “Jolie picks at her skin with her filthy fingernails.”

In a second article about the video, the Mail claimed Jolie “certainly looked stoned” while making the phone call.

It described her as “blotchy faced, hollow-eyed, painfully thin and talking tedious drivel.”

iMediaEthics has written to Jolie’s agents and the Mail for comment.

This week, George Clooney slammed the Mail for publishing a false story claiming his fiancee’s mother was against their marriage for religious reasons.  While the Mail apologized and unpublished its story, Clooney said he didn’t accept their apology and accused the Mail of a “premeditated lie,” as iMediaEthics has reported.
