TIME magazine disclosed in a Dec. 30 blogpost that it published the now-known-to-be doctored photo from Kim Jong Il’s funeral procession.
As we wrote Dec. 29, the New York Times unpublished the same photo from its website Dec. 28 after learning the photo was doctored to remove a group of people from the image. Reuters, Agence France Presse and European Pressphoto Agency all released the photo originally and sent out kill notices after learning of the Photoshop.
TIME‘s international picture editor Patrick Witty explained that it included the photo in its Jan. 9 issue and didn’t receive European Pressphoto Agency’s kill of the photo until after its deadline.
We have written to TIME seeking more information and will update with any response.
