New York Times op-ed columnist Charles M. Blow apologized for his Feb. 22 tweet about Mitt Romney, the National Review’s Jim Geraghty wrote.

The tweet appears to have been deleted, but read:

“Let me just tell you this Mitt “Middle Mouth” : I’m a single parent and my kids are *amazing*! Stick that in your magic underwear. #CNNdebate”

Geraghty wrote to New York Times ombudsman Arthur Brisbane asking about the reference.  According to Geraghty, Brisbane responded that Blow’s “type of tweet isn’t a good idea” because he doesn’t agree with “ad hominem attacks” and “crtiicizing anyone based on religious belief.”

Brisbane added that “Because the writer in this case is an Op-Ed writer, whose opinions are his own, I do not plan to intervene to disagree with the opinion itself.”  Brisbane also  tweeted about the apology, writing “I applaud @CharlesMBlow for apologizing for his tweet on Romney. Criticism based on religion is inappropriate, on Twitter or anywhere else.” according to the Atlantic Wire.

Blow’s apology, tweeted Feb. 24, reads:

“Btw, the comment I made about Mormonism during Wed.’s debate was inappropriate, and I regret it. I’m willing to admit that with no caveats.”
