American Journalism Review’s Michaelle Bond collected the “best practices” for “aggregating without aggravating.”
Referencing Advertising Age’s Simon Dumenco’s complaints over Huffington Post’s over-aggregation of one of his stories, AJR pointed to Poynter’s “seven steps to successful aggregation stategry for your news organization” post and collected comments from editors about aggregation.
For example, AJR cited digital media newsletter Monday Note’s editor, Frederic Filloux’s comments that “Aggregation is absolutely fine as long as publishers benefit from it; it could be traffic or some kind of revenue sharing.”
Essentially, AJR argued that aggregation is necessary and can help both readers and publishers. AJR also included recommendations for having a “human editor” to ensure aggregation is both helpful and working well.
