The Associated Press recommends that its journalists consider the possibility of “danger” in reporting. Using information from social media, especially in “hazardous” areas, according to AP guidelines highlighted by Journalism.co.uk, is risky.
The guidelines, “Social Newsgathering in Sensitive Circumstances,” remind that journalists shouldn’t get information “at the expense of someone’s safety” and advises sensitivity and caution in approaching potential sources.
Further, the AP notes that reporters should handle every story and potential source “on a case-by-case basis.”
