AP to Staff: No Personal Opinions on Social Media

In the wake of the Casey Anthony trial and the New York gay marriage vote, the Associated Press has reminded its journalists they are not allowed to post their “personal opinions on contentious public issues” on social networks like Facebook and Twitter, Poynter’s Jim Romenesko reported.

The memo to AP staff is posted here on Romenesko’s site.  The Associated Press’s deputy managing editor for standards and production, Tom Kent, stated in the memo that the personal comments “undermine the credibility of our colleagues” who report on the stories.
