Art Expert Sues New Yorker for Defaming him in its Profile on Him

“Forensic art expert” Peter Paul Biro is suing the New Yorker’s parent company and New Yorker writer David Grann for $2 million in defamation over the New Yorker’s July 2010 profile of Biro, Media Bistro reported.

Biro claims that the profile “has been highly damaging to his reputation.”  According to Media Bistro, the profile “Certainly puts both Biro’s past and his methods into sharp question.”

The New Yorker’s editor David Remnick reportedly commented on the suit:

“David Grann’s reporting on this story and everything else he does is painstaking in both its attention to the facts and tone. We stand with David Grann and behind the story and believe the suit has no merit.”

Courthouse News added that Biro claims the profile was “written and published with malice and an indifference to the standards of responsible journalism.” Biro also criticized the profile for being based on “a significant extent on anonymous sources.”  Read more about the suit here.
