The BBC wrongly claimed the Daily Mail was “implicated” in the 2011 phone hacking scandal that led to the shuttering of the UK News of the World. The error came in June 7 news bulletins broadcast by BBC Radio 4 and BBC World Service, according to the Press Gazette.
The errors came in reports about the resignation of Daily Mail editor Paul Dacre, who will now be chairman and editor-in-chief of the Mail’s publisher.
The BBC aired apologies that stated:
“Last night’s news bulletin included a report of Paul Dacre’s decision to step aside as editor of the Daily Mail, an influential British newspaper, after 26 years.
“It wrongly stated that in 2011 a number of Daily Mail journalists were implicated in a phone-hacking scandal. We accept that this is not true and apologise to Paul Dacre and the Daily Mail.”
