BBC Identifies South African Man as ‘Gay Marriage’ in Caption, Says Sorry for ‘Technical Mistake ‘

The BBC wrongly identified South African man named Rufus Lekala as “Gay Marriage” in an on-air segment, the Guardian reported.

Lekala is the chief harbor master for South African government-owned freight transport company Transnet. Transnet spokesperson Lunga Ngcobo called for an explanation of the error, commenting to South Africa’s Times Live that:

“We understood that it was a mistake. But we have asked [the] BBC to explain how this happened. We want them to get the facts correct.”

The BBC apologized for its glitch, calling it a “technical error.”

iMediaEthics has written recently about other caption errors including NBC News wrongly suggesting firefighter was holding up a firetruck with one hand, a Kentucky TV news station’s typo suggesting people were arrested in “math lab bust” (rather than the correct “meth lab bust”) and a Utah TV news station’s error in suggesting the state’s governor and attorney general were in a same-sex marriage.
