Burmese Magazine, Editor ‘Charged with’ Libel

Burmese weekly magazine The Voice Weekly, its editor and its publisher were all “charged with defamation” by the Myanmar’s military junta for its reporting on the government’s mining ministry, the BBC reported.

The article claims there was “misappropriation and irregularities in the accounts of several ministries including information, agriculture, industry and mines from 2009-2011,” according to the Associated Press’s article earlier this year. We wrote in May when Burmese court ruled that TheVoice Weekly didn‘t have to identify who reported the story in question.

According to the BBC, the magazine’s editor Kyaw Min Swe is quoted as saying “The court has accepted the charge.” The Associated Press reported that the trial is Oct. 5.

Voice Weekly was censored earlier this summer.   Check out all our stories on Burma‘s media.
