Corrections: YMCA or SPCA?, 8chan, Sex And the City, Chernobyl

iMediaEthics’ latest round-up of corrections includes :

1.The Montreal Gazette made a front-page gaffe hen it referred to the YMCA in a headline for a story about the SPCA.

“Our front page “tease” Saturday used a photograph and text to tell readers about a two-page feature about the SPCA inside the A section. However, the text referred to the YMCA rather than the SPCA,” the Gazette explained. “Many of you called or emailed to point out the large-type mistake and to express your dismay about the error. We’re dismayed too. The veteran editor who made the mistake is embarrassed. So are the two other veteran editors who proofread the page.”

2. The New York Times reported a failed mosque attack in Oslo, claiming there wasa post on mesage board 8chan that may have belonged to the suspect. “About two hours before the attack, a post appeared on 8chan, the message board that had hosted the anti-immigrant manifesto of the man accused of the El Paso shooting,” the Times reported.

But, 8chan was not live that day, with the network provider taking the platform down Aug. 5 after the El Paso Walmart shooting, Newsbusters noted.

The Times’ Aug. 11 correction:

“Because of an editing error, an earlier version of this article misidentified the message board on which the suspect in the attack posted messages before the mosque attack. While it was an online message board, it was not 8chan.”

3. Sex and the City or Sex in the City?

The Associated Press called the famous HBO TV series “Sex and the City,” which starred Sarah Jessica Parker “Sex in the City.” The mistake shows how much one little word can matter.

The Associated Press August 12 correction:

“In an Aug. 5 review of the book “Is There Still Sex in the City,” The Associated Press reported erroneously that the HBO series was titled “Sex in the City.” It is titled “Sex and the City.” A corrected version of the review is below.”

4. Where is Chernobyl?

An Aug. 12 New York Times correction:

“An article on Monday about an explosion that released radiation off the coast of northern Russia last week misstated the location of Chernobyl. It is in present-day Ukraine, which was part of the Soviet Union at the time of the nuclear accident. It is not in Russia.”
