DART Center Publishes Advice on ‘Interviewing Victims’

The DART Center for Journalism & Trauma recently published tipsheet on “interviewing victims” ethically.

The advice came from the center’s October workshop called “Out of the Shadows: Reporting on Intimate Partner Violence.”

The five tips include being transparent and forthright in agreeing with the victim interviewee how the victim will be identified,” and “what lies ahead” in the reporting process.

The DART Center also advises giving “the victim more control over the story process” by letting the victim interviewee choose “the timing and setting of interviews” and letting the interviewee bring a friend with the interview.
