EVENT: Canadian Journalists on Ethics, Regulation

Journalists discussed undercover reporting, the UK phone hacking scandal, media regulation, social media and more at Toronto Star-sponsored March 21 media ethics panel discussion, the Toronto Star reported.

The Star’s editor, Michael Cooke, explained that he hasn’t used “underhanded tricks” in reporting, and instead explained public interest stories that the Star has reported using undercover reporting.  He also noted that readers can complain about Star stories to the Ontario Press Council and questioned why the Sun media chain withdrew its membership.

Globe and Mail columnist Margaret Wente indicated that media regulation may need to be beefed up because of social media.
