Georgia Student Newspaper the Colonnade Apologizes for Plagiarism

Georgia College & State University’s student newspaper The Colonnade, published March 1 note to readers apologizing for publishing a story that plagiarized from the Associated Press. The Colonnade has since unpublished the report, according to its note.

According to the March 1 Letter from the Editor, “A column containing paragraphs that were almost identical to an Associated Press column covering the same topic, but contained no attribution, was published.”

The Colonnade noted that it reviewed that reporter’s previous work but didn’t see any “other identifiable cases of plagiarism.”

The editor, who did not sign the note, took responsibility for the incident for not seeing “the occurrence before publication” and noted that he will “be more diligent about checking for plagiarism” moving forward.

According to the note, “The writer has been dismissed from staff for the remainder of the semester.”  The Colonnade did not name the writer.

We have written to The Colonnade for more information and will update with any response.
