In January, Hungarian weekly magazine HVG.hu claimed that the country’s president, Pal Schmitt, plagiarized parts of his doctoral thesis, as we wrote at the time.
The claims were noteworthy especially given last year’s resignations of two politicians — Karl Theodor zu Guttenberg and Silvana Koch-Mehrin — over accusations of plagiarism.
However, Schmitt has been “cleared” by Semmelweis University’s “five-member committee” reviewing his report, according to the Associated Press.
According to the AP, “despite the inclusion of many pages copied from other sources and a long list of errors,” the committee determined that Schmitt still met “the formal requirements of the time, despite the lack of footnotes and citations, a haphazard bibliography and other flaws.”
