Leonard Lopate, Jonathan Schwartz on leave after ‘allegations of inappropriate conduct’

New York public radio station WNYC put two of its hosts, Leonard Lopate and Jonathan Schwartz, on leave while it investigates “allegations of inappropriate conduct,” WNYC announced in its own news story.

Lopate hosts the popular weekday show The Leonard Lopate Show, according to WNYC’s website.

iMediaEthics asked WNYC how many allegations were made against the pair and when they were made. WNYC responded with its statement from Laura Walker, President & CEO, New York Public Radio, which reads:

“NYPR has placed hosts Leonard Lopate and Jonathan Schwartz on leave effective immediately, pending an investigation into accusations of inappropriate conduct. New York Public Radio takes these kinds of allegations very seriously and is reviewing these matters promptly, said Laura Walker, Chief Executive Officer. NYPR is committed to taking all appropriate steps to ensure a respectful, equitable, inclusive and harassment-free workplace for everyone.”

Minnesota Public Radio fired Garrison Keillor last month after allegations of inappropriate behavior against him. NPR chief news editor David Sweeney was ousted recently, with NPR reporting that there were three sexual harassment allegations against him, and NPR head of news Michael Oreskes resigned Nov. 1 after sexual harassment complaints.

Matt Lauer was fired last month as the longtime host of NBC’s Today Show after allegations were made against him.
