Libel reform Call

As iMediaEthics has written, the UK has been reviewing and working on reforms to its libel law.

According to the BBC, a “report by the joint committee of MPs and peers” reviewing a draft bill for defamation commented on websites hosting anonymous posts.  The committee called for those sites to “have protection from defamation cases if they act quickly to remove anonymous postings which prompt a complaint.”  Further, anonymous posts would be deemed untrustworthy.

The proposal concerning anonymous posts could help websites “avoid the risk of a defamation claim,” but could result in “entirely legitimate” posts being taken down without good reason.
