Maldives Journalists Association Criticizes Police for Asking Reporters about Sources

The Maldives Journalists Association (MJA) has criticized the police for “questioning reporters over both the identity of sources and the accuracy of their stories,” Minivan News reported.

The Maldives Media Council added that it is concerned about the police questioning. In question is a Dec. 29, 2010 report claiming that a report was leaked and later “found hidden in a fish container.”  The report was published by Maldives radio station DhiFM, whose news editor has been questioned by the police.

According to Minivan News, Police Sub-Inspector Ahmed Shiyam explained that the police received complaints over the DhiFM and before taking any police action in the case, the police wanted to fact-check DhiFM’s story.
