The Michigan Truth Squad, which fact checks and investigates claims made in political ads, is expanding its scope for November’s general election, Detroit, Mich. news website Hometownlife.com reported.
“Three referees will join current reporters in examining political ads. The added reporting muscle will allow the Truth Squad to expand its fact-checking scope to include the state’s congressional candidates, according to John Bebow, executive director of The Center for Michigan,” Hometownlife.com added. The truth squad already was checking out ads and campaign material for the state Legislature, governor, attorney general, secretary of state and political party races and elections.
The truth squad is “a nonpartisan political ad watchdog website centered by the Center for Michigan,” a “think-and-do tank:” The truth squad asks for tips from the public and then looks into “questionable claims” in political ads and campaign materials.
“If a tip exposes an exaggeration, misinformation, an outright lie, or a distortion, we will call a ‘Foul!’ on the candidate and campaign,” the truth squad’s website explains.
