The Knight Center for Journalism in the Americas is offering a $45 three-week online class on journalism ethics for “journalists currently working in Latin America and the Caribbean.”
The English-language class is “designed to teach journalists to approach ethical decision-making as a reasoning process that take into account all aspects of a situation,” according to the Knight Center’s announcement. Students will learn about “the different categories of ethical reasoning” and apply ethics to “controversial decisions taken by media organizations and media personnel in the past.”
The class’s instructor Kayode James is quoted by the Knight Center as saying:
“Caribbean journalists aren’t always given a solid idea of how crucial their role is to the development of this region…This lack of awareness, coupled with the increasingly commercial demands of media houses, has clouded the professional values that once acted as a moral compass for Caribbean reporters and broadcasters. A strong ethical code keeps journalists focused on their responsibilities to wider society, the profession itself, and their employers.”
James is a journalist and a senior lecturer of communications at the College of Science, Technology & Applied Arts of Trinidad & Tobago’s journalism school.
Applications are due Feb. 14 at 5 PM CST.
