The New Times’ Arthur Asiimwe reported on new set of media laws in Rwanda. According to the daily Rwandan newspaper New Times, the laws update the current media law, add an “access to information bill” and make TV, radio and print news outlet Orinfor the public broadcaster named Rwanda Broadcasting Agency. The bill also will let media self-regulate and establish a code of ethics..
But, The New Times questions if the laws will “make or shame” the media depending on if the media embraces the laws or “maintain the status quo.” Specifically, New Times noted the potential impact of the freedom of information bill.
In a separate news report, The New Times reported that the freedom of information bill would be the “first of its kind in the country and seventh in Africa.”
