New Syrian Media Laws

Syria is reviewing new set of media laws, according to United Press International.  The laws “include sweeping freedoms” and are expected to provide “better access to information” and “more indepedence” for journalists in Syria.

One article of the draft media laws calls for journalists to “be committed to principles and values of the constitution and law and observe the values of authenticity, ethics and honesty as to preserve the values of society.”

Russian news agency RIA Novosti reported that one unnamed commitee member who participated in drafting the bill explains that the bill “guarantees media freedom” and would create a court for dealing with media issues.
