Burma has removed censorship restraints on 178 of its 358 media outlets, Burmese news site Mizzima reported.
According to Mizzima, the “82 journals and 96 magazines” will now be able to publish without needing the OK from the censorship board pre-publication. Burmese news site Irrawaddy.org reported that the rest of Burmese news outlets must still be approved before publication and that the 178 uncensored publications will be reviewed post-publication.
The media outlets focus on “arts, knowledge, health, sports, children and technology.” According to Mizzima, Burma isn’t permitting new media outlets licenses to publish currently.
Press freedom group Reporters without Borders ranked Burma 174 of 178 countries on its 2010 press freedom list.
