Charles Apple and Poynter’s Al Tompkins that White House photographers shot staged Obama photos of U.S. President Barack Obama making the announcement that bin Laden was killed.
According to Reuters photographer Jason Reed, photographers were brought into the room where Obama gave his speech after the speech happened, and then Obama “re-enacted the walk-out and the first 30 seconds of the statement for us.”
Tompkins reported that White House News Photographers Association president, John Harrington, said that previous presidents have used the staging practice.
Tompkins noted that Reuters and the Associated Press both disclosed that the photo was from a re-enactment but some newspapers didn’t keep that disclosure in their captions.
Ultimately, Tompkins called for “this kind of re-enactment to end” and disclosure. Read Tompkins’ full post here.
