Pakistan Press Council chairman criticized the media’s reporting on suicide, Pakistan’s The News reported.
The chairman, Shafqat Abbasi, called for the media to abide by journalism ethics and ” avoid creating sensationalism/romanticism and portraying suicide victims as heroes,” according to The News.
Abbasi was quoted as saying: “Media should discourage such trends. Press should avoid using words as ‘suicide ended pain or suffering’ or highlight the methods used as a successful suicide. Instead of this just use ‘dead by suicide’.”
