PCC Investigating Telegraph’s Undercover Reporting on Liberal Democrats

The UK press complaints commission  began Jan. 13 its investigation into the Daily Telegraph’s undercover reporting last month, the Guardian reported.

As iMediaEthics wrote in December, the Telegraph’s series of exposes caught on tape members of Liberal Democrats from the British Parliament without their knowledge.  Notably, Vince Cable’s comments led to his being removed as head of media policy.  The Telegraph’s reporters posed as mothers asking the members of Parliament for advice during private constituent meetings.

The president of the Liberal Democrats, Tim Farron, reportedly called on the the PCC to look into the Telegraph’s reporting, which he labeled a “fishing expedition.”

According to the Guardian, the PCC’s ” investigation will hinge on whether the use of clandestine methods was justified ‘in the public interest.'”
