Pop Singer Charlotte Church Sues The People for Libel after Fake Quotes, Story

Pop singer Charlotte Church filed libel lawsuit against UK newspaper The People over a November 6, 2011 story , The Guardian’s Roy Greenslade reported. The People is a Trinity Mirror-owned weekly newspaper with a circulation of about 800,000 copies, according to Mondo Times.

The story claimed that Church “drunkenly proposed to her boyfriend while singing karaoke,” Greenslade explained.  Church called the story and its quotes “a complete fabrication” as the night in question she was “performing in a completely different town with a large public audience.”

As Greenslade noted, and we wrote, in late November, The People apologized in print to Church for the story.

The People’s apology was “the day before Church gave evidence to the Leveson Inquiry” and published without Church’s agreement, according to Greenslade.
