The UK press regulator the Independent Press Standards Organisation has received more than 65,000 complaints and inquiries in its 5 years of existence.
IPSO reported the statistic in a September blogpost about its five-year anniversary. “Sometimes that has been thousands of complaints about a single article and at other times it’s been someone distressed that they think their privacy has been breached or that a paper has written something about their kids that it shouldn’t have,” IPSO said.
IPSO added that it sent more than 300 advisory notices to news outlets after a member of the public requested IPSO alert news outlets that they want privacy. IPSO noted that in addition to handling complaints, it also has issued guidance for reporting on certain areas, such as suicide.
An IPSO spokesperson declined to comment beyond its blogpost.
