Société Générale has filed libel lawsuit after the Mail on Sunday wrongly reported that the European bank is “on the brink of disaster” this summer, the Guardian reported.
As StinkyJournalism wrote, the Mail on Sunday retracted and apologized for its Aug. 7 article. Agence France-Presse (AFP) also retracted its story “linking Le Monde’s fiction series [describing the bank and financial issues] to Société Générale’s stock market drop.”
However, the bank claims the online apology is buried and that the newspaper didn’t publish a print apology. Regardless, the bank reportedly said it “wasn’t satisfied” with the apology, the Guardian explained.
The bank claims that the article “seriously injured…its reputation” and is calling for damages.
The Financial Times reported that “The Mail on Sunday has said that it has already apologised for publishing the article and that any claim for damages would be resisted. Associated was not available for comment. SocGen declined to comment.”
