Media Bistro’s Fishbowl LA questioned the Boston Globe’s decision to name the woman who “tipped the FBI to the whereabouts” of James “Whitey” Bulger.
As FishBowl LA explained, once the Globe named the woman, her name and identity was much reported on. An investigative editor for the Boston Globe, Scott Allen, told Fishbowl LA that the newspaper ‘talked internally a lot” prior to naming the Whitey Bulger informant, but ultimately decided to do so.
“If we thought publishing her name would have jeopardized her, we would not have done so,” Allen is quoted by FishBowl LA as saying.
We wrote in June 2011, right after Bulger’s arrest, when FishBowl LA called out the media for reporting Bulger’s neighbor’s name as the alias Bulger was using. Despite reports that Bulger was using the name Charlie Rosenzweig, it turned out that Rosenzweig is the name of Bulger’s neighbor.
