NBC News director of standards and practices Aly Colón was named Washington and Lee University’s new Knight Chair for Journalism Ethics.
“Media without ethics become media without trust,” Colón is quoted as saying in the university’s press release about his hiring.
Colón’s work at NBC News and Telemundo included training and making ethics calls in disputes. Telemundo is “the second largest provider of Spanish-language content worldwide.”
Colón is “responsible for applying ethical decision-making to the news operation, providing ethics training to reporters and producers, and reviewing scripts, video and digital news coverage,” according to the press release.
Colón has also taught ethics at the Poynter Institute.
The previous chair was Edward Wasserman, who is now Dean of the University of California-Berkeley’s graduate school of journalism. The interim dean has been former New York Times public editor Arthur Brisbane, according to the Washington and Lee news release.
