Lawrence, Mass.-based radio station WEEI suspended sports host Christian Fauria after he used a fake Asian accent on air to impersonate sports agent Don Yee, the Asian American News reported.

The WEEI program was discussing the Boston Herald being duped by someone posing as Yee, who represents New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady.

Fauria read the texts that a fake Yee sent to the Boston Herald, duping the tabloid newspaper. Yee doesn’t speak with any discernible accent, which the show acknowledged by playing a recording of him and commenting Yee “sounds like a Caucasian.” Even so, Fauria said, “For me, I don’t know why, Don Yee sounds like an Asian guy,” Deadspin reported. Deadspin posted audio of the segment.

In a statement on its website, WEEI disclosed the suspension of Fauria and pointed to his tweets, apologizing:

Fauria tweeted apologies to Yee and his audience for what he called “a horrible attempt at humor.”

“In a segment during the show, I impersonated agent Don Yee in an insensitive and regrettable way. I want to publicly apologize to Don and anyone in the audience who heard it,” he added. “I have also reached out to Don directly to personally apologize. I have been disciplined by WEEI management and I fully support their decision.”

WEEI’s website notes that Fauria played for the Patriots from 2002 and 2005 and played in the NFL for 13 years. His bio reads:

“Fauria, a 13-year NFL veteran, spent four years with the Patriots from 2002 to 2005, and helped New England win two Super Bowl rings at Super Bowls XXXVIII and XXXIX. More recently, Fauria has worked as a college football analyst for CBS, color commentator for Patriots preseason games locally on WBZ-TV, and host of a pre- and postgame show during the NFL regular season.”

Last month, WEEI suspended radio host Alex Reimer after he called New England Patriots quarterback Tom Brady’s 5-year-old daughter “an annoying little pissant.”
