Will Casey Anthony make more money off news outlets by getting paid for an interview?
The Orlando Sentinel weighed that question in a Dec. 16 story reporting that news outlets are denying any suggestions they will shell out cash for an interview with Anthony, who was found not guilty in the 2008 murder of her 2-year-old daughter earlier this year.
According to the Sentinel, Poynter’s Al Tompkins noted that “someone will interview” Anthony, but he doubted a news outlet would pay her for the interview. Instead, if Anthony wants to make money off her story, he suggested she could pursue a film or book venue,
“Networks know they simply cannot pay for this one. Not in any form,” Tompkins is quoted as saying. “They would be rightfully crucified. But, after all, she was acquitted and she has every right to say what she wants to say. They just don’t have to pay for it.”
The Hollywood Reporter noted that TLC, A&E, Lifetime, HLN and MSNBC spokespeople said their networks either wouldn’t pay or wouldn’t be interested.
We wrote in 2009 when it was revealed that ABC News paid Anthony $200,000 in “deal” to license Anthony’s photos and home movies, money that she later used for her defense. In July of this year, ABC News announced it would only pay licensing fees in rare occasions.
